A Red Day

No time to write but here’s what happened to my holdings.
GND turned up nicely after the news of the acquisition. ZED down allot, it should just be temporary as this was the low of the day. CMO still hovering between 105 and 107 SOH down after yesterdays upwards move.

JSE-listed shipping company Grindrod has acquired two terminals from Tate & Lyle South Africa, in Durban and Cape Town, for an undisclosed amount, the company said on Wednesday.

The Durban facility is located in Maydon Wharf and caters mainly for storage and export of molasses, while the Cape Town terminal caters for the import of various chemicals and vegetable oils.

“Grindrod’s strategy for expanding its landf reight business includes the development and establishment of port side tank terminals. Grindrod, to date, has expanded rapidly in dry terminals but has yet to make an entry into tank terminals,” said Grindrod director Laurence Stuart-Hill.

The terminal operations of Tate & Lyle South Africa will be branded Grindrod Tank Terminals.

Tate & Lyle’s spokesperson Chris Roberts said that, owing to the decline in molasses volumes for export from Durban, Tate & Lyle was keen to find a new owner to invest in, and grow the terminal operations.

The acquisition would be 100% owned by Grindrod, but structured in a way that would introduce an empowerment partner.

“A new entrant into the market will provide efficiencies, competition and greater volume to service the growing South African economy,” added Stuart-Hill.

He said that there was a growing demand for petroleum storage and transit facilities in the ports, particularly as demand in South Africa for petroleum products had increased. The demand would likely be serviced by more imported product.

“An opportunity also exists to provide port side tank facilities for import licensees which are in the process of being appointed for the importation of such fuels.”

Grindrod was also keen to establish a bulk liquid terminal at Maputo port that would service the growing demand for chemical and vegetable oils in the Mozambican market, the company said in a statement. In time the facility would also service the Gauteng market.

Grindrod has a shareholding in the Maputo Port Concession Company, which is responsible for the development and operation of the Maputo port.

Daily Equity Report

Not great news, it seems like I bought GND at the peck and its now retracting, CMO not doing that much better either.

In Sum I took a Huge knock today

On the upside, all the the other stocks are up and ZED unchanged. I guess this is the price you pay when you invest a third of your portfolio in one stock. Eitherway, I still think ofer the medium turn all these investments will pay of.

CMO should be one to watch over the next few days, their results ad due on the 31st and it might be very good news.

ADW (African Dawn Capital Limited) Directors Dealing In Securities:

Some directors dealing came through on SENSE just a few seconds ago.

Sales of 1 112 500 at 239 per share (R 2,658875) by a director to buy the same amount of single stock futures with an expiry date of 30 Sept 2007. to hedge against this position 166 000 shares were bought at R2.38 (R 395 080)

Single stock futures or SSF's are highly leveraged instruments. Directors are in the now when it comes to a companies future earnings and I highly doubt that a director will buy a SSF unless he thinks the price will increase so that he can make more money.

Share Name Price Yesterday Diff % High Low Deals Vol Value
ADW AFDAWN 235 238 -3 -1.26 240 230 6 70,100 164,034

Thus the director might have made use of the temporary weakness to buy these at a favorable price. I might be interpreting this completely wrong and I must admit my knowledge of SSF’s is limited.

I will try to update what happened in the markets lately later today

Ok so the market is down down down mainly due to metal prices being lower. hence selling ARQ was a good move (at least in the short run) when (if) it turns up again I might jump back on if I have enough capital.

GND also a alot down today. (Me thinks it is because of some profit taking after the last weeks run and the weaker markets)

at a few min to market close here is what happened, GVM down allot, a SENS message came out but unfortunately I could not check it. SIM seems to be down, my guess is due to the lower metal prices. Another stock that cough my attention in Faritec, will watch for now.

2:21 -GMV

directors dealing in GMV purchase of shares, this is good news 😉
Sim is also up allot today:

Daily Statistics
Share Name Price Yesterday Diff % High Low Deals Vol Value
GVM GVM 760 760 0 0.00 760 760 36 83,000 630,800

Other News, I sold ARQ for about a R400 loss (including trading costs) and decided to buy some more GND

From now on I will mostly trade in blocks of R10000, this way a share has to gain only about 4% before I recover trading costs. simmers up 22c since it first cough my eye. I suspect the upward trend to continue for a while still.
